Differentiation (Single Variable) and Economic Applications

2 min read·CUET PG Economics

1) Derivative: meaning

The derivative measures the rate of change of a function.

If y=f(x)y=f(x), the derivative is:

dydx=f′(x)\frac{dy}{dx}=f'(x)

Economic meaning: “marginal” change.

  • Marginal cost = rate of change of cost w.r.t. output
  • Marginal utility = rate of change of utility w.r.t. consumption

2) Rules of differentiation (must-know)

  1. Power rule:
ddx(xn)=nxn−1\frac{d}{dx}(x^n)=nx^{n-1}
  1. Constant:
ddx(c)=0\frac{d}{dx}(c)=0
  1. Constant multiple:
ddx(cf)=cf′\frac{d}{dx}(cf)=c f'
  1. Sum/difference:
(f±g)′=f′±g′(f\pm g)'=f'\pm g'
  1. Product rule:
(fg)′=f′g+fg′(fg)'=f'g+fg'
  1. Quotient rule:
(fg)′=f′g−fg′g2\left(\frac{f}{g}\right)'=\frac{f'g-fg'}{g^2}
  1. Chain rule:
ddxf(g(x))=f′(g(x))⋅g′(x)\frac{d}{dx}f(g(x)) = f'(g(x))\cdot g'(x)

Key standard derivatives:

  • ddx(ex)=ex\frac{d}{dx}(e^x)=e^x
  • ddx(ln⁡x)=1x\frac{d}{dx}(\ln x)=\frac{1}{x}
  • ddx(ax)=axln⁡a\frac{d}{dx}(a^x)=a^x\ln a
  • ddx(ln⁡f(x))=f′(x)f(x)\frac{d}{dx}(\ln f(x))=\frac{f'(x)}{f(x)}
