Functions (Single & Multivariable) and Economic Examples

3 min read·CUET PG Economics

1) Function: definition

A function ff from set AA to set BB assigns each x∈Ax\in A to exactly one y∈By\in B:

f:A→B,y=f(x)f: A \to B,\quad y=f(x)
  • Domain: set of inputs (A)
  • Codomain: B
  • Range (image): set of outputs actually attained

2) Types of functions (common CUET PG patterns)

2.1 One-one (injective)

Different inputs give different outputs:

x1≠x2⇒f(x1)≠f(x2)x_1\ne x_2 \Rightarrow f(x_1)\ne f(x_2)

2.2 Onto (surjective)

Every element of codomain is hit:

∀y∈B,∃x∈A s.t. f(x)=y\forall y\in B,\exists x\in A \text{ s.t. } f(x)=y

2.3 Bijective

Both one-one and onto → invertible.

3) Common function forms used in economics

3.1 Linear function

y=a+bxy=a+bx

Used for demand/supply approximations, linear regressions.

3.2 Quadratic

y=ax2+bx+cy=ax^2+bx+c

Used for cost/revenue with turning points.

3.3 Power function (Cobb–Douglas type)

Y=AKαLβY = A K^\alpha L^\beta

Special case with constant returns: α+β=1\alpha+\beta=1.

3.4 Exponential

y=Aerxy = Ae^{rx}

Used in continuous growth, compounding.
