1) Definition (CUET-ready)

An essay is a short-to-medium length piece of prose that:

  • explores an idea, question, argument, or experience,
  • in a structured yet flexible form,
  • often marked by a distinctive voice or perspective.

The word “essay” (from French essayer, “to try”) signals:

  • exploration and testing of ideas rather than exhaustive proof (though many essays are rigorously argued).

2) Key characteristics of the essay

A) Argument and reflection

Essays may:

  • argue (persuasive/analytical essays),
  • reflect (personal essays),
  • explain (expository essays),
  • or combine these.

B) Voice and persona

Essays often foreground:

  • a thinking “I” (even when not first-person),
  • a rhetorical stance and ethos.

C) Structure (not always rigid)

Typical structures include:

  • thesis → development → conclusion,
  • or associative movement (especially in personal/reflective essays).

3) Major types of essay (high-yield)

A) Expository essay

Explains a concept clearly.

B) Argumentative essay

Takes a position; uses reasons/evidence.
