Module 22Preview

Literary Terms: Paradox

2 min read·CUET PG English

1) Definition (CUET-ready)

A paradox is a statement, idea, or situation that appears self-contradictory or logically impossible at first, but on closer examination reveals a deeper truth, complexity, or insight.

A compact exam formulation:

  • Paradox = apparent contradiction that illuminates meaning.

2) How paradox functions (conceptual clarity)

Paradox works by forcing the reader to:

  • hold two opposing ideas together,
  • rethink assumptions,
  • recognise complexity beyond simple binary logic.

Paradox often signals:

  • tension,
  • ambiguity,
  • layered truth (especially in philosophical or metaphysical writing).

A) Paradox vs contradiction

  • Contradiction can be merely inconsistent without yielding meaning.
  • Paradox is productive—it generates insight.
