Module 17Preview

Senas

2 min read·CUET PG History

1) Why the Senas matter (in early medieval eastern India)

The Senas are important because they represent:

  • a major political formation in eastern India succeeding earlier powers in the region
  • a period often discussed in relation to:
    • consolidation of Brahmanical (especially Sanskritic) elite culture
    • landholding and agrarian expansion dynamics
    • shifting patterns of patronage and religious institutional strength

CUET PG questions usually test:

  • Senas as an eastern Indian dynasty
  • their broad cultural and religious orientation in standard textbook framing
  • continuity of early medieval patterns: land grants, intermediaries, agrarian base
  • the regional sequence: Palas followed by Senas (in common narrative)

2) Sources and reconstruction

  • inscriptions and grants
  • literary/courtly traditions (used with caution)
  • regional historical reconstructions based on genealogy and territorial control

Exam-safe: Anchor answers in general early medieval patterns rather than over-specific claims unless asked.
